I'm originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana. I'm a double major in Parks & Recreation Management and Travel & Tourism Management with a minor in General Business. I found Henderson State University because of my specific academic and career interests. Surprisingly, very few places offered what I was looking for, so that narrowed down the search quite a bit. Plus, the tourism opportunities here are extensive. In all, making Arkadelphia and Henderson my home was the perfect choice.
Here in Arkadelphia, it seems like everybody knows everybody. When I first got here, I got plugged into a really great church group; at school, the small student-to-teacher ratio is the perfect amount. If I want to talk to my professor, I can walk into his or her office and they will take the time to talk to me; I don't have to go track them down.
The community is more than willing to help out university students when they need help preparing for their careers. Several of my friends are education majors, and the local elementary schools and middle schools allow them to get the observation hours they need.
I definitely want to stay here after I finish school. There are so many opportunities and I have made many industry contacts that can help me begin my career. This summer, I will be interning at DeGray Lake State Park, a nationally renowned vacation hub. It's here, it's local and I love the outdoors. Plus, my sister will start her college education here at Henderson in the fall and, in the near future, my parents have plans to retire in Arkansas.
Henderson State student Lacie Carter is a double major in Parks & Recreation Management and Travel & Tourism Management with a minor in General Business. Her specific academic interests brought her to Clark County and the thriving tourism industry will keep her here in the years to come.
