My parents completed their master's degrees at Henderson and our family has stayed in town ever since. When I started college, I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I heard people talking about the aviation program and thought that would be fun. There aren't many women in the program right now, which puts me ahead in the industry. After I graduate, I plan to be a commercial pilot.
During the semester, the aviation students are guaranteed a flight spot and, on the weekends, we can schedule a plane by the hour. We also have a syllabus of flights we must complete. For instance, we may be asked to make a fifty-nautical-mile flight, but it doesn't indicate where. We can pick the destination, just so long as it meets the requirements. I've flown to Shreveport and gone shopping for the day with my girlfriends and then come back.
Jenny Wei is a junior at Henderson State University. She is a member of the aviation program and plans to launch a career as a commercial pilot.
